100 Proof began to brew in 1979 when original members Jerry Fretwell, Teddy Lawhorn, and Randy Edwards began playing music together. They combined their talents with some other slightly more seasoned musicians, and the band was born. After playing the regional festival circuit and countless bars and fraternity parties, they recorded two albums (and 8-tracks, too!): 1982's "Sing a Bluegrass Song for Me," and 1984's "Memories and Used to Be's," both of which featured many songs written by Edwards. Countless festival, bar, and fraternity party gigs later, the originals went back to their respective wives and lives for a hiatus that lasted until 1998, when husband and wife Sam and Kimberly Lapsley began playing music with Randy Edwards somewhere on a river bank. Bluegrass festivals ensued, and soon Jerald (now with a booming bass business) and Teddy (who made it to the Grand Ole' Opry with Jimmy Fortune) were back in the mix, and the band was again brewing, if a bit on the weak side.

The most recent highlight was in June 2006, when they won the bluegrass band competition at the Maury River Fiddlers Convention, and they now play regularly (check out schedules and booking availability on My Space and at their link on FretwellBass.com) with a cocktail of their musical loves, ranging from old standards to bluesy grass to new songs by Randy. They'll be going into the studio for the first recording session of this run of 100 Proof in summer 2007 and look forward to seeing you all at this year's convention and beyond!
